Fair wind behind inaugural Irish Maritime Awards

The Irish Echo is setting sail on a new journey with the first-ever Irish Maritime Awards earmarked for New York in May 2026.

Guest speaker at the gala event at Club 101, The Kalikow Building, 101 Park Avenue, New York, NY on 21 May will be Congressman Tim Kennedy - whose district includes the Port of Buffalo which became the 'Gateway to the West' when the Erie Canal opened.

Irish America has long been an anchor of the U.S. maritime sector, from the shipyards and tug fleets to the ports powered by generations of Irish skill, grit and leadership. Today, that legacy continues to steer innovation, safety and growth across America’s waterfronts, proving the Irish maritime spirit is as strong as ever.

McAllister Towing, with operations from Eastport, ME to Port Everglades, FL, and marine logistics company Moran, which boasts 100 tugboats in its fleet, are just two of the many storied Irish American names in the maritime sector.

These inaugural awards will celebrate excellence across the maritime value chain, recognizing individuals and organizations that demonstrate operational distinction, innovation, safety leadership, and a meaningful contribution to U.S.-Ireland maritime ties. Also welcome will be nominations for Irish American maritime writers or maritime artists engaging with seafaring life, ports, ships, coastal communities, and naval history.

Nominations are now open on our website.

"We invite nominations for outstanding Irish Americans and dynamic companies or agencies whose leadership, innovation, and impact are shaping the future of the maritime sector," said Irish Maritime Awards gala Honorary Chair and VP of Red Hook Terminals, Tom Griffith.
