Jack McGarry, famed Dead Rabbit, founder has made the short journey from Downtown to Jersey City for his latest hospitality venture: San Patricios.
Mexico and Ireland are forever linked by the San Patricios, the Irish Catholic rebels who sided with the Mexicans against their former paymasters in the Union Army during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.
Branded deserters by the American army, their courage remains celebrated in Mexico to this day.
McGarry sees strong bonds between the Irish and the Mexicans. “There’s a shared love of community, of drinking, celebration, hospitality, sports, arts, music," he says. "Obviously, they’re very different in their outward manifestations of that, but there’s a huge bond in terms of what both cultures love.”
And the new venture builds on the Dead Rabbit legend, he told thespiritsbusiness.com: “The Dead Rabbit story is very political – the gang formed against American nativism,” he explains. “San Patricios is the same – and I think that is a prescient message, given what’s going on right now.”
