COLLEGE: O’Neill wins in Rhode Island

Alex O’Neill of Providence won the women’s 1500 meters at the Black & Gold Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. The junior from Ennis, Co. Clare broke the beam in 4:28.91, with the runner-up along four seconds later.  

Aoife Mahony of Palm Beach Atlantic placed third in the women’s 1500 meters at the Spikes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. A senior from Listowel, Co. Kerry, she came in at 4:37.50. Teammate Madelyn Rodriguez won the race in 4:33.16. A similar result played out in the 800 meters as Mahony finished third in 2:16.82 to Rodriguez’s winning 2:16.74.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Shane Bracken of Mississippi got second place in the men’s 1500 meters at the Texas Relays in Austin. The senior from Foxford, Co. Mayo ran the distance in 3:43.40, with only Cruz Gomez of Texas ahead of him, in 3:43.10. Auburn sophomore Louis O’Loughlin from Clondalkin, Dublin finished seventh in 3:49.68. 

New Mexico’s Kevin Mulcaire was the 16th finisher of 69 runners (second in his division) in the men’s 5000 meters at the Stanford Invitational but his time of 13:42.99 represented a new personal record at the distance, an improvement of 19 seconds. 

“It’s been a funny last few months, and it has been a little tough in my personal life,” said Mulcaire, a senior from Clarecastle, Co. Clare. “I haven’t run a 5k since my PR in 2015, so I didn’t want to go in expecting it to happen. Bu training has been going well and there is a whole lot of positivity and love I’m feeling from the Lobos right now. It has been a really special few months for me and [Friday] was the cap of it.”

MEN’S GOLF

Mark Power of Wake Forest got a share of 14th place in the Valspar Collegiate at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. The Kilkenny senior combined rounds of 69, 73 and 67 to finish the event four strokes under par and seven in back of Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg, the medalist. Marquette’s Josh Robinson, a senior from Lisburn, Co. Antrim, shot rounds of 73, 76 and 69 to garner a share of 56th place. 

Jack Hearn of South Alabama tied for 15th place in the Craft Farms Intercollegiate at the Craft Farms Resort in Gulf Shores, Ala. The senior from Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary knocked out rounds of 74, 73 and 71 to finish two strokes over par and seven behind the winning score posted by Colin Sikkenga of Oakland.  

Jordan Hyland of Davis & Elkins earned a share of eighth place in the MEC Spring Classic at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, W.V. The senior from Omagh, Co. Tyrone shot rounds of 74 and 72 to finish the event four strokes over par and eight off the winning number belonging to Alex Easthom of West Liberty. 

Jordan Logue of Mississippi College finished alone in 20th place in the Spring Bulldog Bash at Canebreak in Athens, Ala. The Belfast senior signed to rounds of 73, 73 and 71, which left him a stroke over par for 54 holes and 10 behind champion Jean Loui de Plessis of Shorter. 

Alex Maguire of Florida Atlantic tied for 52nd place in The Goodwin at Harding Park in San Francisco. The senior from Mornington, Co. Meath shot rounds of 70, 75 and 70 to finish five strokes over par and 14 off the winning number. Oklahoma’s Ben Lorenz topped the 155-man field. 

WOMEN’S GOLF

UCLA senior Annabel Wilson tied for 11th place in the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Ka’anapali Royal in Hawaii. Wilson, from Lurgan, Co. Armagh, shot rounds of 71, 69 and 74, which placed her two strokes under par and 10 behind teammate Zoe Campos, who was low individual.
