The Brehon Law Society of New York and leading Belfast-based human rights law firm, KRW Law, are accepting applications for a “unique and prestigious three-month summer internship opportunity” for a current law student for summer 2019 in Belfast.

The internship dates are flexible dependent upon the intern’s school schedule, but are about mid-May through mid-August, said a Brehon release.

The internship is being named for the late attorney and right activists, Brigadier General James P. Cullen.

KRW Law will offer the successful candidate a stipend while the Brehon Law Society will provide round trip airfare between the U.S. and Belfast.

Said the release: “Internship responsibilities include keeping the Brehon membership informed on current human rights issues and legal controversies in the North, particularly around Brexit and the Good Friday Agreement.

“The intern will be placed in KRW Law’s Legacy Litigation Department, which will provide first-hand exposure to the challenges of litigating in a post-conflict setting. Primary tasks include legal research; legal writing; litigation support, such as drafting correspondence and document review; litigation observation; participation in local community events and outreach; and assisting in the development of press releases and web postings for Brehon members and media outlets.

“The 2019 Summer Intern will have interest in and knowledge of political issues in the North of Ireland and be familiar with The Troubles. An overall interest in human rights and activism is preferred.”

Applications must include: Cover letter with a personal statement demonstrating why you are interested in the internship; a resume/CV; a writing sample; list of three (3) references; grade sheet/transcript (unofficial is acceptable).

Applications should be sent to Eileen Burrowes via email at burrowes.eileen@gmail.com, and must be received no later than February 1, 2019.

A committee comprised of Brehon Lawyers will review all materials, and selected candidates must be available for in-person or phone interviews between February 18 and March 1, 2019. All questions about the internship and application process can be directed to Jennifer Frankola-Crawford, Esq. at (917)456-6523.
