A stone is finally cut for Duffy

Philip Duffy, the Irish immigrant railroad contractor for whom Duffy’s Cut in Malvern, Pennsylvania takes its name, finally has his own gravestone.

“We had always assumed a collapse of the church in a fire had destroyed his grave, but we learned this year that his family did not place a stone for fear of it being desecrated by his detractors,” said Dr. William Watson, who has led the Duffy’s Cut excavation project down the years.

The St. Anne’s Historical Committee at St. Anne’s Church in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia located Duffy’s grave this year and Bill Doran of West Laurel Hill Cemetery (where the Duffy’s Cut victims are buried) made the headstone.
