Providence senior takes Penn Relays 3K

Providence College’s Charlotte Ffrench-O’Carroll scored a career-defining victory in the College Women’s 3,000 meter Championship at the Penn Relays on Thursday evening. Her winning time of 9:20.72 was more than five seconds faster than that of the runner-up. Ffrench-O’Carroll is a senior from Dublin.

Iona’s Jake Byrne, a freshman from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, took second place in the College Men’s 5,000 meter Championship at the Penn Relays on the same evening. He ran the course in 14:01.99, topped only by Indiana’s Zachary Mayhew, who finished in 13:53.94.

Stony Brook’s Patricia Barry ran fourth in the College Women’s 10,000 meter Championship at the Penn Relays also on Thursday. The senior from County Tipperary came in at the 35:35.45 mark in a race won by Toledo’s Ari Fisher in 34:41.55.

Bryant’s Eimear Black, a sophomore from Glengormley, Co. Antrim, ran third in the women’s 5,000 meters at the Brown Springtime Open in Providence, R.I. on Sunday. She finished in 17:57.22 in a race won in 17:24.25 by Brown’s Elaine Kuckertz.

Stony Brook’s Mary O’Connor, a junior from Waterford, was runner-up in Heat 1 of the women’s 400 meters at the Yale Springtime Invitational in New Haven, Conn. on Sunday. Her time of 58.89 was exceeded only by the 58.32 posted by Natasya Rodriquez of St. John’s.

GOLF

Dermot McElhennon led Barton College to a second-place finish at the Conference Carolinas Championship at Maples Golf Club in Vass, N.C. The sophomore from New Bern, N.C. shot 8-over-par 224 (74-78-72) for the event, which was good for a share of fifth place, seven strokes off the medalist, Adam Black of North Greenville. McElhennon’s parents are natives of Draperstown, Co. Derry.

Toledo’s Chris Selfridge tied for seventh place at Purdue’s Boilermaker Invitational, played over the school’s Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Selfridge, a Belfast freshman, fired rounds of 72-73-73, which left him five strokes on the high side of the winning score posted by Illinois’ Luke Guthrie.
