Noreen McHugh, the wife of James McHugh, has died following the crash that also claimed the former Donegal footballer's life on Monday.
Noreen McHugh, aged in her 60s, was seriously injured in the crash involving a car and a van on the N3 at Drummallaght, County Cavan, on Monday afternoon, the Irish Times was reporting.
She was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital for treatment but died on Tuesday evening. James McHugh, the driver of the car, died in the crash.
James McHugh, from Cill Chartha, died as a result of the collision involving a car and van at Drummallaght.
The driver of the van was treated for minor injuries.
James McHugh was a member of Donegal’s 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football winning team. A brother of fellow All-Ireland winner Martin McHugh, his son Eoin is a current Donegal footballer.
In a statement, Donegal GAA said for many people across the county “James was one of their first heroes."
Referring to that historic All-Ireland win, the statement continued: “James’ unprecedented achievement on the turf of Croke Park that September day was made all the more special by the fact that he shared the field with his beloved brother Martin. To see the brothers from Kilcar soldier together as Donegal finally reached the summit is a memory that will live forever in the history of our county.”
The statement added: “The Donegal connection has continued through his family, with his son Eoin and nephew Ryan now much-loved members of our current Donegal senior football panel. His nephew Mark also proudly followed in his footsteps, helping Donegal to All-Ireland glory in 2012.”
Cill Chartha GAC said: “We, as a club, are devastated to hear of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our own, James McHugh. As a mark of respect, all club activities will be suspended until further notice.”
Sinn Féin Donegal TD Pearse Doherty said James “gave so much to Donegal GAA and will be remembered with great pride and affection across the county and beyond."
Fianna Fáil TD Pat "the Cope" Gallagher said: “James brought total commitment and energy to the game, skill he had in abundance, and he never pulled back from the rough and tumble of the tackle whether that was a club or county match; he was always the professional sportsman.”
