Limerick overpower Galway in All Ireland

The Liam MacCarthy is back in the Southwest, as the green flares declared triumphantly late on Sunday afternoon at Croke Park.

Limerick are now six for six in the All Ireland finals they’ve reached over the past nine years. They challenged the pain and hurt of the last two years, it seemed, into a renewed intensity and physicality, which together with their tactical nous and experience, overpowered a young Galway team in the 2026 final. In the first of the impressive sequence in 2018, it was a one-point game against the same opposition; this time, the 11-point gap, 1-29 to 1-18, flattered the Tribesmen.

Galway were under pressure from the get-go on a beautiful afternoon in a packed, expectant Croke Park, and while their young stars in the front line showed early promise, the goalkeeper and backline were also called into necessary action. And even when the gap was two and three points in the first half, Galway seemed to be struggling to stay in touch. By half time it was five points, and what seems to have been a pattern in Croke Park games in 2026, the third quarter proved decisive as the winners piled on the pressure and racked up vital points. Just before the final whistle, the margin was 14 but a well-taken penalty made the score-line a little more palatable for the Westerners.
