Pic of Day: A peaceful scene in the Normandy countryside. But of course that was not the case 82 years ago when the Allied invasion of Hitler's fortress Europe began on June 6 - this after being cancelled on the 5th due to bad weather. The statue is of Dick Winters, who commanded Easy Company in the real battle for Normandy and who is played by Damian Lewis in "Band of Brothers," which marks its 25th anniversary later this year. The Winters statue is a couple of kilometers outside the town of Sainte-Marie du-Mont where Easy Company and other units of the 101st Airborne Division engaged in combat with the German defenders in the early hours of D-Day.
