Loughrea make it three Galway titles in a row

Loughrea made it three in a row in Galway when they beat Tommy Larkin’s by a point to win the Galway senior hurling final in Salthill. It was Tommy Larkin’s first final appearance since 1971. Fifty five years ago future Galway manager Cyril Farrell was in the Larkins team that beat Carnmore for their first and only Galway senior title. On Sunday Tiernan Killeen was the hero for Loughrea when he landed the match-winning score deep into injury-time. In Antrim Dunloy Cuchullains won first title since 2022 after they saw off a late Cushendall resurgence to clinch their 17th crown.

In football Sarsfields won their 26th Kildare title, beating Maynooth by four points St Conleth’s Park. Maynooth, appearing in their first senior final since 1916, arrived with enormous support and confidence after eliminating Athy and Naas on their way to the final. Former Kildare goalkeeper Mark Donnellan kicked five points for Maynooth, but a second half goal from Con Kavanagh was the turning point in the game as the Newbridge club triumphed.  In Limerick Fr Casey’s of Abbeyfeale survived a late scare at Rathkeale to beat Kildimo-Pallaskenry by two points for a ninth Limerick football crown and their first since 2006.

Meanwhile in the Munster club hurling championship Aidan McCarthy guided Inagh-Kilnamona to a perfect Munster debut with a seven-point win over recently crowned Cork champions Glen Rovers, which secures them a home semi-final against Thurles Sarsfields. Three weeks after winning the Clare county final, the Inagh-Kilnamona captain scored 14 points in front of 2,890 supporters at Páirc Uí Rinn. Meanwhile in the Leinster club football championship Dublin star Con Callaghan converted a late two-pointer to give his club Cuala a two-point win over Tullamore at Parnell Park. Also in Leinster The Downs of Westmeath were made to fight all the way to shake off a spirited challenge by a young Clonguish side from Longford in an exciting game in Cusack Park, Mullingar. And in Wexford Park Seán Forde held his nerve in the 63rd minute, converting the winning free, as Kilanerin advanced to the quarter-finals with a one-point win over Louth champions Newtown Blues.
