Democrats have taken control of both the Senate and the Congress after what has proved a devastating election for Republicans.
Last night, New York Senator Chuck Schumer celebrated the flipping of both houses by declaring the Republican 'Red Brick Wall' had been "reduced to a pile of red bricks".
Among prominent Irish American Republicans who lost out in the Blue Surge were Pennsylvania Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and James Gallagher of California's First District who lost out to Democrat Mike McGuire.
A bizarre SNAFU in New York's 17th Congressional District delayed counting but at the time of writing Congressman Mike Lawler — a strong advocate for Irish America — was trailing by seven points to Cait Conley.
