Dr. Crokes win final, captaincy

Kerry is one of the few counties where the County Championship winners can nominate the county’s senior football captain for the following year. And after Dr Crokes’ win over Kenmare Shamrocks in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday the honor for 2027 will go to Dr. Crokes once again.

Gavin White from Crokes was Kerry captain in 2025, so next year the captaincy will probably go to Tony Brosnan, who was captain on Sunday or maybe to midfielder Mark O’Shea. It was Crokes’ 15th time to lift the Bishop Moynihan Cup. Across the border in Cork Nemo Rangers beat city rivals St Finbarrs at windswept Pairc Ui Chaoimh to be crowned county champions for the 24th time.

Mark Cronin kicked 8 points for the winners, while one of the Barrs’ goals

scorers was John Wiggington Barrett, a grandson of Cork Hibernians’ legend Dave Wiggington. Meanwhile in the home of the All-Ireland champions Mayo, Castlebar Mitchels with county players Bob Tuohy and Paddy Durcan in their team, were crowned champions after an 8-point win over Garrymore at MacHale Park to lift to Moclair Cup for the first time since 2017.

In Galway it looked like Peter Cooke had won it for Moycullen with a brilliant two-pointer but Tomo Culhane’s late goal won the day for Salthill-Knocknacarra. In the replay of the Tyrone football final the Red Hand’s inter-county goalkeeper Niall Morgan converted a late free to give his club Edendork a one-point win over Errigal Ciarán and take their first-ever Tyrone senior title.

A replay in Louth also where Ciaran Downey was Newton Blues’ hero as he kicked a last-minute two-pointer to secure a one-point win over St Mochtas in Drogheda. The Blues won their first Louth Championship in 1889 and this was their 24th win.

Long-serving Kilkenny forward T.J. Reid says he ready to commit to the Cats for a 21st season if his former club and county colleague and now Kilkenny manager Henry Shefflin wants him. Reid played his part in a what was a 22nd county title with a convincing win over Tullaroan, who are managed by former League of Ireland player David Mulcahy. Shefflin was at Nowlan Park on Sunday as Kilkenny GAA honored all their All-Ireland winning captains since 1963 in a ceremony at half-time.

Kilmacud Crokes denied south Dublin neighbors Cuala from Dalkey of a football-hurling double as Crokes claimed their the eight Dublin senior hurling title with a convincing win at Parnell Park. Games between these two affluent southside clubs are reportedly known as the “Clash of the Cash.”
