The Grand Council of United Emerald Societies (GCUES) has named Dennis J. Schock, President of the United Sanitationmen’s Association Local 831, as its 2027 Irishman of the Year.
Dennis Schock, born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Robert E. Schock and Mary Schock, both of proud Irish descent, began his family's American journey in 1890 when his paternal grandparents emigrated from Kilkenny, Ireland. They initially settled in Bangor, Maine, before establishing their roots in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
He will be formally honored at the GCUES Irishman of the Year Dinner on Wednesday, 20 January 2027, at Antun’s of Queens Village — a long-standing gathering place for New York’s Irish-American community.
Dennis began his career with the Department of Sanitation on March 21, 1987, proudly starting as a Sanitation Worker. His leadership qualities shone through when he was elected Shop Steward, Union Delegate, and Business Agent of Queens West. On June 5, 2010, Dennis was elected Vice President of Local 831 and on May 6, 2025 he became President of Local 831.
Dennis has consistently served with distinction, placing the needs, safety, and dignity of his union members first, according to Grand Council President Martin Bellew, through “uncompromising integrity and an unshakeable work ethic.” His Irish roots, Bellew adds, have long guided his sense of public duty.

Honoring his 40 years of service and his role in the Irish-American community, Schock will act as Aide to the Grand Marshal at the 2027 New York City St Patrick’s Day Parade. He will join Grand Marshal John Samuelsen on Fifth Avenue on Wednesday, 17 March 2027.
The GCUES award ranks among the most respected honors in New York’s Irish-American circles, recognizing individuals who combine professional achievement with cultural pride. According to Bellew, Schock’s choice reflects “a lifetime of service — to his City, his community, and his heritage.”
