Captain O'Shea heads in winner

Dara O’Shea headed home the 91st-minute winner for Ipswich Town against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

It was the least spectacular of the goals in the 2-1 game — the first two being scorchers from outside the box, but the Ipswich skipper won’t care about that, scoring as he did for the second time in 87 league appearances for his club and leading them to a very late come-from-behind victory.

Fellow Irish defender John O’Shea was in the Hull City side that came back to secure a draw against unbeaten visitors Everton, confirming their surprisingly robust start to the season. And with Coventry City getting a second consecutive win after four opening losses — 4-1 at home against Newcastle on Monday night — the promoted teams are looking really good.

Nobody’s in a hole yet, although the bottom three — Bournemouth, Tottenham and Fulham — are all without a win. Spurs playing some really stylish football at times, managed to eke out a late draw away at Old Trafford. Manchester United seemed to be back again in underachieving mode, just about their default position since Alex Ferguson called it a day in 2013. They did introduce as a sub an interesting acquisition from Brighton, the Cameroonian Carlos Baleba, a bulky midfielder who fit in right away and looks like he’s going to be a handful for opposing teams.

Manchester City, with the whole world turned against them, were defiant and utterly ruthless in dispatching Liverpool at Anfield after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second yellow card in the second half. They may be “cheats” as the Reds fans chanted, but they’re good for their current top-of-the-table position. Liverpool’s 10 men, in the absence of key stars like Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexander Isak, folded rather too easily, going down to three brilliantly taken City goals.

Premier League results: Arsenal 2, Leeds 1; Aston Villa 2, Brentford 2; Chelse 5, Bournemouth 1; Crystal Palace 2, Notts Forest 1; Coventry 4, Newcastle 1; Hull 2, Everton 2; Ipswich 2, Fulham 1; Manchester Utd 1, Spurs 1; Liverpool 0, Manchester City 3; Sunderland 0, Brighton 2.
