Na Fianna win thrilling Dublin ‘derby’ to reach semi-finals

Na Fianna 1-18 Ballymun Kickhams 1-17

Na Fianna produced a late rally to oust near-neighbors Ballymun Kickhams by a single point at Parnell Park on Sunday in a game which featured seven All-Ireland medal holders.

Ballymun looked the better early on and, inspired by eight-time Celtic Cross winner Dean Rock, who landed three two-pointers, led by eight points at the interval – 0-13 to 0-5.

They looked to have booked their place in the semis at that stage with an early Cathal Tighe goal on the resumption but Keelan Sexton’s green flag from the penalty spot was the injection Na Fianna needed to rouse themselves. They cut down the lead bit by bit with a massive two-pointer by Paddy Small and another two-pointer by Sexton, which drew the sides level with three minutes to go.

Galway’s Walsh key man

in Crokes’ victory march

Are we looking at Dublin, Leinster and possibly All-Ireland champions in the making again following this Kilmacud Crokes 19-point saunter past Lucan Sarsfields at Parnell Park on Saturday?

I might be a bit previous in making such a bold statement but with the caliber of players they have - including Galway’s Shane Walsh and Dublin’s Paul Mannion, it looks like scoring won’t be a problem for them this club championship season however far it takes them.

The  champions from two years ago started at pace and then kept going with Walsh’s long-distance shooting helping them to an early eight points lead 0-9 to 0-1.

By half-time and without breaking sweat they had increased their advantage to 10 points and when Walsh popped up for the game’s only goal in the second-half, the game was over as a contest.

All-Ireland champions and current Dublin holders Cuala also looked the part as they had 20 points to spare in their 4-20 to 0-12 drubbing of Clontarf at Parnell Park

Horgan’s loss after scoring 2-9

How unlucky can you get? Midleton ousted Glen Rovers to reach the Cork Premier senior hurling semi-finals thanks to a comeback victory and despite a brilliant showing from veteran Rebel Patrick Horgan at the weekend.

Two “Hoggie”  goals saw the Glen lead by 2-10 to 1-8 and by game’s end he had amassed 2-9 of his side’s 2-17.

However, fellow county man Conor Lehane inspired his opponents at Pairc Ui Rinn, to come back from seven points down to hit 2-19 and win by two points with Lehane accounting for 0-10 in the process.
