JACK ON THE DOUBLE: Jack McCarthy beside the memorial stone to his veteran dad, also Jack

Big fáilte for writing on the wall at Princeton

As interest in the Irish language continues to enjoy a resurgence across the U.S., it's not unusual to see signs or words in Irish at Irish pubs, including at Stout restaurant in midtown Manhattan where mammoth facsimiles of the striking covers of two famous Gaeilge novels by Donegal author Séamus Ó Grianna welcome visitors (below). However, you can also come across the tongue of the Gael in much more rarefied environments such as the chapel at Princeton University. For in dedicating a memorial stone to his father, Irish Echo reader Jack McCarthy included that immortal phrase of Irish eulogies 'Ní bheidh a léitheid ann arís' (There will never be the likes of him again.). Jack, a supporter of Irish projects for decades and a student of Ulysses, is a grad of Princeton as was his dad, also Jack (Class of '43).
