Catherine Connolly Elected Irish President

Heavens Above! Catherine Connolly has been elected the 10th president of Ireland in what has been reported as a landslide victory. The Independent Galway TD - who was supported by a united left alliance - defeated Fine Gael rival Heather Humphreys in an election that saw a record number of spoiled votes. Humphreys called to congratulate Connolly before all the votes were counted. Connolly is the third woman to hold the office, a constitutional presidency, this after Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese. Incumbant President Michale D. Higgins remains in office until November 10/. Connolly is pictured here in Dublin Castle after her victory. Photo by Eamonn Farrell/RollingNews.ie.
