Déise decimated by rampant Cork

Cork 5-13; Waterford 0-9

Just as was feared, this turned into a turkey shoot with poor Waterford way too weak to make it a game for the Rebeletts who were up for the game from the off.

At least we got record attendance for the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship final and a brilliant solo showing from winning skipper Amy O'Connor but other than that, Croke Park was a quiet place to be in for this top of the bill in the Camogie world on Sunday.

The game started with Cork having the wind behind them and they took advantage to be out of sight by the interval. And if that wasn’t bad enough O’Connor shot two more goals to bag her hat-trick in the space of 120 seconds after the second half began.

With a personal tally of  3-7 she was the unanimous choice for Player of the Match  and it was her performance alone that would have been of most interest to the  30,191 fans who attended the three finals on the day.

Sorcha McCartan and Fiona Keating completed the rout on the hapless Deise defense as Cork gained their 29th title in facile fashion.

There was a lovely moment near the end when veteran Ashling Thompson, who worked hard to recover from a cruciate, was introduced as one of the five subs by manager Matthew Twomey.

Twomey spoke of the heartbreak of losing two finals as a great motivation factor in the run up to Sunday’s big game: "We spoke about it Friday. We bottled a lot of it. It was tough last year losing it and losing a league final again and we got a lot of criticism.

"But we just kept it between our four walls. We bottled it and there was no way we were going to leave it down today."

Meanwhile, Derry were the victors over Meath in the intermediate final, while Clare defeated Tipperary for the junior title.
