Power-Cassidy stars for Holy Cross in road win

Bronagh Power-Cassidy’s 15 points led Holy Cross in Friday’s 62-45 road win over Bucknell in women’s basketball. The Dublin sophomore shot 5-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-6 from downtown, and 1-for-2 at the foul line. She also got credit for four rebounds and two steals as the Crusaders improved to 9-3. 

Katie Williamson carried Southern Connecticut State to a 67-55 win over the University of the District of Columbia in New Haven on Thursday. The Dublin junior had a double-double, scoring 19 points and posting 10 rebounds. She made eight of 14 field goal attempts and all three of her free throws. She also got credit for four assists. The Owls are 8-3.

High percentage shooting from Deborah Ogayemi wasn’t enough as Texas-Rio Grande Valley lost to New Mexico State, 67-59, on Thursday and previously winless Seattle, 59-53, on Saturday. The Waterford sophomore made six of eight field goal attempts and five of seven free throws for 17 points in the loss to State. She also collected five rebounds. She made good on four of eight shots from the floor against Seattle, finishing with eight points and, again, five boards. The Vaqueros are 6-7. 

Ella O’Donnell wrested 12 rebounds in Quinnipiac’s 58-48 win over St. Peter’s in Jersey City on Thursday. The freshman from Shankill, Co. Dublin also scored two points on a field goal. The Bobcats are 8-5. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

 California pulled out a rare win, defeating Colorado, 80-76, at home in Berkeley on Saturday. Dundalk freshman ND Okafor saw 16 minutes of action for the Bears (2-13), hitting all three of his field goal attempts for six points. He also grabbed three rebounds and assisted on three buckets. Teammate Sam Alajiki, also of Dundalk, was perfect on one shot from the floor and two from the foul line. The sophomore scored four points and took down three boards. 

 Aidan Igiehon contributed eight points as Grand Canyon defeated California Baptist, 73-59, in Phoenix on Thursday. The junior from Clondalkin, Dublin clicked on three of four field goal attempts and two of four free throws. He also rejected a couple shots. The Lopes improved to 10-4.

 C.J. Fulton led the offense for Lafayette on Friday in a 60-47 home loss to American. The Belfast sophomore was high scorer for the Leopards with 12 points and dished out a game-high six assists. He came by his output entirely outside the three-point arc, where he made four of five attempts. Lafayette fell to 2-12.

Sean McCarthy came up shy of double-doubles as Felician dropped games to Bloomfield, 76-71, at home on Thursday and to Jefferson, 95-78, in Philadelphia on Saturday. The Cork sophomore scored nine points (4-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-2 going long) to go with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals against Bloomfield. He again scored nine in the Jefferson game, dropping in four of 10 from close range, along with a free throw. Eight caroms fell his way as the Golden Falcons dropped to 4-9. 

FOOTBALL

 Ben Kiernan’s collegiate career ended in disappointing fashion as North Carolina lost, 28-27, to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Wednesday. The Dublin senior got off three punts, averaging 44.7 yards, with a long boot of 57 yards. The Tar Heels lost their last four contests to finish the season at 9-5.
