LGBT activist Brendan Fay joined Robert Croonquist, Kathleen Sullivan, and other New York members of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons for an ocean plunge in Rockaway. According to Fay, the frigid plunge in the Atlantic was aimed at drawing attention to New York City Council Member Danny Dromm’s sponsored legislation which resolves to divest pension funds from nuclear weapons production and creates an NYC committee to advise on City policy and nuclear disarmament. The swimmers were joined by Ardes Quinn, whose grandmother was one of the early founding pioneers of the Coney Island Polar Bears. Croonquist, a former public school teacher, said he was driven to jump into the ocean when he thought about the high school students he taught at Jamaica High School in Queens.Fay first participated in winter swims in his native Drogheda, organized by Isobel Sanroma and in support of Children from Chernobyl.
