O’Dwyer joins NY parade board

Dr. Brian O’Dwyer was 2019 New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal and now, as a member of the parade organizing board, will have a role in planning future parades.

The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade has announced that Dr. Brian J. O’Dwyer will be joining the parade’s Board of Directors.

O’Dwyer was grand marshal of the 2019 parade.

“We are delighted to add Brian to our board”, said Sean Lane, Parade Board Chairman.

“He and his family have been an important part of the history of this great parade since the 1930s and it is an honor to welcome a longtime friend of the parade to the board when we will be making decisions concerning the parade’s future,” said Lane.

Dr. O’Dwyer, said a parade release, is the immediate past grand marshal and hails from a legendary New York Irish family.

Stated the release: “He is the son of Paul O’Dwyer who was the President of New York City council from 1974 to 1979 and the nephew of the Honorable William O’Dwyer, former Mayor of New York City.

“Both Paul O’Dwyer and William O’Dwyer were grand marshals of the Parade in 1974 and 1938 respectively. Brian has been involved in many Irish causes and was an active participant in the Northern Ireland peace negotiations.

“He has received many accolades including Grand Marshal of the 258th Parade for his tireless work over the years on behalf of immigrants and Ireland.

“Brian brings to the board knowledge of the parade and expertise in both the political and legal fields that is unparalleled.”

Added Hilary Beirne, Chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Foundation. “The parade and foundation are delighted that Brian is being added to the parade’ fiduciary body and we wish him a successful tenure as a board director.”
