Former Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey was admitted to hospital on Tuesday after suffering a suspected heart attack. Gardai say that Carey, who is only 41, collapsed in a public office in Kilkenny City on Tuesday afternoon and was admitted to the local St. Luke's hospital.

His condition was described as stable. Carey retired from inter-county hurling in 2006, but continued to play for club side Young Irelands of Gowran.

Carey, who separated from his wife Christine a few years back, was due to marry his business partner Sarah Newman in July, but last Sunday, Ms. Newman confirmed to the Irish Sunday newspapers that the couple has split up, admitting that the relationship failed due to their mounting financial pressures.

Carey is the holder of five All-Ireland titles and nine All Star awards, but has been hit with personal and business difficulties over the past year.

Last May, the Commercial Court made orders against Carey and Newman for the repayment of almost €9.5 million to Allied Irish Banks. The debt was linked to loans for properties at the exclusive Ladycastle estate in The K Club in County Kildare, and at Mount Juliet in Kilkenny.
