Two charged in Belfast murder

A husband and wife have been charged with the murder of a man who was shot dead in Belfast last week.

Charles Stephen Valliday, 40, and Julie-Ann Valliday, 35, of Powers Court Place, are charged with murdering Christopher Mackin last Thursday night as he called to a house in the city center.

The 31-year-old was shot up to four times at College Square North. A police officer told Belfast Magistrate's Court that the couple had "worked together." He said Mrs. Valliday had "lured" the victim into a trap.

The court heard that 15 cartridges were found at the scene of the murder.

Mackin, who has a child, was conscious when emergency services arrived but died an hour later in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

After the shooting, Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said that Mackin had been known to the police but that the shooting was unusual for the area.

"I think the motive lies more in close associations with Christopher Mackin and I don't think it involves any of his previous criminal activity," he said.
