Cavan man wins big

Brendan Riordan can stay in the scratcher a little longer each morning if he so wishes.

The Cavan native and Yonkers resident came up trumps after buying a New York Lottery "Win For Life Spectacular" ticket at the Irish Mini Mart on McLean Avenue.

Riordan, 28, scratched his way to financial security with a ticket that will provide him with 20 annual installments of $520,000 or $337,256 after taxes.

With payments bundled together, Riordan, who works in real estate, was presented with a bumper sized check for $10 million at the Empire Casino in Yonkers last week.

Riordan quit smoking two months ago, and said at the presentation that the money he was saving allowed him to but more lottery tickets. One of seven children, he left Cavan with his family a decade ago. The Riordans lived in Florida for a time before moving to the New York area.

"I'm going to buy a house, maybe a new car. I'll keep doing something. I'd like to keep doing real estate, but who knows," Riordan said.
