Brigid relic eludes thieves

It's Saint Brigid's Day and it may well have been intervention from the saint herself which ensured the safety of a St. Brigid relic that is held by a Dublin church.

A reliquary that normally contains a relic of the saint was stolen from the church as parishioners prepared for the patron saint's feast day, the first day of spring in the old Celtic calendar.

Thieves made off with the Celtic-designed reliquary, an ornate container for relics, which was attached to the altar at St. Brigid's Church in Killester, North Dublin on Monday, the Irish Independent reported.

The container, fashioned in the style of St. Patrick's Bell, housed a small fragment of St. Brigid's skull which was brought back to Ireland from Portugal in 1929. Fortunately, parish officials had recently removed the relic, which was fixed to a cruciform, as the double-door reliquary underwent renovations. Gardai are investigating.
