Irish jobless rate ticks up

The number of unemployed in Ireland rose by 1500 in July, this according to the latest figures from the Irish government's Central Statistics office.

The latest official figures show that 14.3 percent of the republic's workforce is jobless. This resulted in 470,284 people claiming unemployment benefits in July. The average unemployment rate last year was 13.6 percent.

The CSO figures show that more than four times as many women as men joined the "live register" in July. During the past year there was a 3.7 percent increase in the number of women claiming benefits and a slight drop in the number of men. However, the CSO view is that men are still more likely to be out of work than women.
