NOTW's end has Irish angle

The demise of the London Sunday tabloid, The News of the World, will have a direct effect on the Irish newspaper market where Irish versions of British "red tops" do a vigorous trade.

The Irish News of the World employs a staff of 22 and all have been asked to be available over the next two weeks to be individually informed of the intentions of management, the Irish Independent reported.

The Irish NOTW is edited by Geoffrey Frazer, who is from Banbridge, County Down, and had a Sunday circulation of around 120,000 in recent months.

It employs 22 full-time and 10 part-time staff as well as columnists including money hurling legend D. J. Carey and former Irish soccer player Kevin Moran, the report stated.

It is the third Sunday paper to disappear from the Irish market this year following the closure of the Sunday Tribune and the Star on Sunday.
