Arson suspected in fatal Roscommon fire

A five-year-old girl has been killed in a suspected arson attack on a house in County Roscommon.

The alarm was raised shortly after 2.30 a.m. Monday when the fire was discovered at the property on Termon Road in Boyle.

The girl has been named locally as Mari Connolly. Her father, Richard, and her two sisters, aged six and eight, escaped from the building and were taken to Sligo General Hospital.

It is understood the girl's body was found dead in an upstairs bedroom. Fire crews reported parts of the first floor had collapsed into the bottom of the house during the intense blaze.

The girl's father jumped from an upstairs window with the two girls in his arms. He remains in a Dublin hospital with serious back injuries.

Some 20 firefighters responded to the call, which gardaí said they are treating as suspicious. The scene is still being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau and the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr. Khalid Jabber.

Mari's mother Teresa - who has just given birth to twins - visited the scene later in the day to lay flowers and a photo of her daughter outside the house
