How do you celebrate your Irishness? I celebrate my Irishness by anchoring my children in our heritage—passing down the distinctive humor, resilience, and outlook on life that define our culture. I maintain a living connection to the island through close ties with my sister in Dublin and cousins throughout the country. For my family, there is no greater celebration than returning as often as possible to our cottage in west Clare, where we reconnect with our roots and the timeless spirit of the Irish coast and landscape
Name a maritime hero you admire and why? The Irish Whalers of Sag Harbor - My admiration lies with the Irish immigrants who fueled the whaling industry in ports like Sag Harbor. These men left their homes to face the perils of the deep sea, often in the lowest-ranking positions, yet they became the backbone of a global industry. Their quiet endurance and contribution to maritime commerce are a testament to the Irish work ethic that helped shape the American coastline.
What did you learn in your first job which has been useful to you throughout the career? Early in my career, I learned that while a strong idea provides the compass heading, it is only 10% of the journey. The other 90% is the hard work and tenacity required to stay the course. This focus on endurance and follow-through has been my most reliable guide, teaching me that the value of an idea is only realized through the commitment to see it through.
