Martha Mahoney

Where do you live? Albany, NY.

Current company and position? Senior Attorney, Office of the New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

First job and what it taught me? My first job was a server at an ice cream and hamburger stand called Ross'. It taught me the values of teamwork, customer service, hard work, responsibility, treating people equally, and enjoying the experience at work. It was owned by a close-knit family who I got to know well, which also enhanced the experience. I loved connecting with customers, getting to know our regulars, and learning about their lives. I even reconnected with a distant relative by happenstance. I would later find that this love of connecting with others (and improving their lives) is the throughline for what motivates me in later positions I've held in government and public service.

How do you embrace your Irish heritage? The Irish are known for their lighthearted honesty, authenticity, kindness and storytelling. I try to carry this spirit with me in my social and professional relationships. I come from a big Irish Catholic family and have fond memories of being together around the holidays and hearing stories from family. Although I don't host a lot of events, I try to bring a sense of warmth, welcoming, and belonging to gatherings. I also love music, especially hearing live music, and try my best to enjoy the moment!

Something people would be surprised to know about me... I'm super passionate about local government and neighborhood quality of life matters. It marries my love of connecting with people/solving their problems with my love of law and policy. It makes the policy process personal and relational with super tangible results.
