Jennifer Flynn

Current Company and Position: Department Manager, Employee Wellness Center, Consolidated Company of New York

Family: I'm New York Irish American, my Great-Grandparents proudly come from Carndonagh Donegal (McLaughlin), Carrowmena Donegal (Beatty) and County Waterford (Flynn).

First Job: Library page at the Queens Library.

What it taught me: Organizational skills; teamwork, commitment, and accountability.

Best advice you could give someone starting out: Your integrity is an important aspect of who you are. Show your commitment to learn, listen, and persevere early on. 

Who is your hero and why? My parents Stephen & Christine are my heroes.  They have modeled the way in which I align my values since childhood. They have taught me to aim high, exemplify a strong work ethic, encouragement of authenticity, make an impact, be strong yet humble.  They have always encouraged me to be the best version of myself, continuing to learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Their sacrifices, dedication, support and guidance has shaped my life and afforded me opportunities and the foundation for my future. 

Biography: Jennifer Diane Flynn was born and raised in Howard Beach, Queens, New York.  Jennifer attended Our Lady of Grace school and parish.  Jennifer continued her Catholic education in high school attending The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) and then Iona University for her Bachelors of Arts and Masters of Science degrees in Criminal Justice. Jennifer was a prominent leader at TMLA; captain of the softball team, leader of spirit days, Irish society and actively involved in the liturgies and services with the Sisters of St Joseph. At Iona, Jennifer worked closely with Brother J. Kevin Devlin with student retention, new student orientations and the Edmund Rice Society.  Jennifer was on the dance team, Gaelic Society and marched proudly with Iona in the NYC St. Patrick's Day parade.

Soon after graduating from Iona, Jennifer began working at Consolidated Edison Company of New York as a union employee, Local 1-2, Administrative 

Clerk in Electric Operations. While working in the union, Jennifer attended graduate school at night to attain her Masters of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Investigations. During her career, she has overcome barriers and has been the “Firsts" in many roles. Over the last eighteen years Jennifer has had increasing responsibilities such as but not limited to; the first employee in what was known as EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity Affairs) to transition from Union to Management, first section manager focusing on workplace culture of respect and compliance. She was the first woman in Orange & Rockland Utilities to be named Ethics Director since the inception of the position over twenty-five years ago. She is currently the Department Manager of the Employee Wellness Center promoting the well-being of employees.

Jennifer is well-respected for her innovation and adaptability- she has earned a reputation for fairness, empathy and approachability. Jennifer continues to play an integral role in shaping and leading the company’s culture-where every employee is acknowledged for their talents, backgrounds and experiences.  You can call Jenn for advice, guidance, best practice approaches, and consideration for others yet always maintaining a standard of excellence and adherence to policy.

Jennifer was instrumental in revitalizing the Emerald Society of Con Edison to be internally recognized.  Her leadership helps to highlight Irish culture and community through organizing, managing and producing events. Jennifer was recently selected as the President of the Emerald Society of Con Edison, in which Jennifer will serve as the first woman to hold that title in its 62 year existence! She will also serve as an executive board member, of which few women hold, for the Grand Council of United Emerald Societies since it's inception in 1956.

Jennifer is active in mentorship at her alma maters and participates in numerous volunteering and fundraising efforts. To highlight one area, Jennifer has been donating her hair almost every two years for the last twenty years to organizations that make wigs for children with sickness.  The process requires cutting minimum of12 inches of hair that provides hairpieces to children with hair loss from chemotherapy or autoimmune diseases.

Jennifer was a 2021 40 under 40 honoree by the Irish Echo.

Finally, Jennifer was recognized by Con Edison by receiving the highest honor that can be bestowed upon by our employees. She was honored to receive the Living Our Values Award, which is an award that exemplifies the outstanding support and dedication to both her company and her personal life.
