Edward Clegg
Job Description? Fire Fighter/EMT for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Why I chose this career? Growing up I had never much thought of being a firefighter. My grandfather was a captain in the Atlanta Fire Department, but I unfortunately never got to meet him. My stepfather was also a volunteer firefighter in South Carolina and I loved listening to all of his stories. After college, I felt somewhat lost because I'd realized I didn't want to teach. I was married and had two babies, so the pressure was on. I decided on a whim to join a local volunteer fire department. Once beginning training there, I instantly knew that it was the career path that I wanted to take and I haven't looked back since!
Proudest moment of my career? I legitimately experience pride every day with each and every person I help. I can't pin it down to one shining moment. Daily, I'm doing any combination of: administering CPR, Narcan, conducting lift assists, and protecting people's lives and property through fire prevention or fire extinguishment. I have compassion for each person I encounter.
Something people would be surprised to know about me... I actually went to college and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Soon after substitute teaching for about a year, I realized I'd rather run into a burning building than teach kids!
