A landmark new documentary celebrating the life, legacy and enduring global influence of Daniel O’Connell was screened in New York on May 6th, bringing together University College Cork (UCC) alumni and friends for a special commemorative event.
"Daniel O’Connell: The Emancipator," offers a fresh and compelling exploration of one of Ireland’s most transformative figures, marking the 250th anniversary of his birth.
According to a release, the screening forms part of a year-long programme of events inviting audiences worldwide to reflect on how O’Connell’s vision for justice, democracy and peaceful reform continues to shape the modern world.
Directed by Ruán Magan and narrated by Domhnall Gleeson, the documentary is a Create One production in association with University College Cork, the University of Notre Dame and RTÉ.
It traces O’Connell’s remarkable journey from a Kerry lawyer to an internationally influential advocate for civil rights, whose methods inspired movements for liberty and equality far beyond Ireland’s shores.
The film features contributions from leading historians and scholars, including former President of Ireland Mary McAleese, alongside newly uncovered archival material that sheds new light on O’Connell’s life and achievements. An original score by acclaimed musician Colm Mac Con Iomaire further enhances the storytelling.
