File Under File: Where I Come From

File Under File (being the Irish word for bard) is a new addition to the Irish Echo which will feature the work of Irish American poets. If you wish to submit a poem for consideration, please email Louise Maguire at the Echo.

Where I Come From

I come from the emperor's gut wrench

Longing to return

From borderlands and contraband

And windswept empty strands

I come from whitewashed cottages

Crouched on treeless hills

Soft talk of lambs and bullets and bombs

And children became swans

From cattle boats and airplanes

From hunger strikes and famine

From the children of sweet Danu

And the butcher's apron shadow.
