Just hours after the election of his successor President Michael D. Higgins is in a Dublin hospital being treated for what has been described as a "localised infection."
The admission to St. James's hospital was by arrangement on Sunday.
As of today, Monday, the president, who is 84, is still being treated. His admission was first reported by the Irish Times.
RTE reported a presidential spokesperson as saying that the president was in good spirits and will be returning to Áras an Uachtaráin.
President Higgins will remain in office until Catherine Connolly is sworn in as Ireland's new president on November 11.
After the result of Friday's election became clear President Higgins sent a message of congratulation to Catherine Connolly.
He stated: "I have this evening spoken by telephone with the president-elect, Catherine Connolly. I congratulated the president-elect on her election as the tenth President of Ireland on what is a momentous day for her and her family.
"The president-elect will have the full support of this office as she prepares for her inauguration next month."
