Éire Óg complete Clare double

Éire Óg 1-16; St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield 2-6

Doubling up proved absolutely no problem as Éire Ógs landed their fourth Clare senior football crown in five years following a facile 7-point victory over St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield at Cusack Park on Sunday.

It followed hot on the heels of the previous week’s victory in the hurling equivalent over Clooney-Quinn to bag their first Canon Hamilton Cup since 1990.

Only the concession of two goals in the first half kept this game interesting but when they were tested, the winners stuck on 1-8 on the scoreboard without reply as they kept hold of the Jack Daly Cup for another 12 months.

Odhran O’Connell was the only thorn in the side of the holders as his two green flags in the first 21 minutes - scores that meant it was all square at the break at 0-7 to 2-1.

David McNamara put the Ennis side ahead within two minutes of the resumption but Paddy Bugler stood up with a fine  two-pointer  to put the Saints a point to the good.

Jack Joyce and McInerney meant it was even-steven once more before the side finished in style including a cool goal from Gavin Cooney which gave them an easy seven-point run in to collect the cup.

Summerhill 0-16; Ratoath 0-13

Eoghan Frayne, the county skipper, led from the front as his club Summerhill beat rivals Ratoath to claim a ninth Royal  title.

Frayne showed his teammates the way as he landed half his side’s total as they had three points to spare against their biggest rivals.

Behind him he had a Summerhill bunch who showed a huge appetite for work in breaking up the slick Ratoath style masterminded by former Kerry All Ireland winning star Paul Galvin.

This was  Summerhill’s second success at Ratoath's expense in the past four seasons, having previously lost to the same opposition  in the 2019 and 2022 showdowns.

After a disastrous start to the championship year in which they lost two of their first three games, the winners took advantage of their good fortune in advancing on scoring difference to knuckle down for the business end of the series.

Victories over Trim and then holders Dunshaughlin after extra-time before completing the coup de gras with Sunday’s win.

While Eoghan Frayne weighed in with eight points, the contribution of his brother  Conor with four was a major factor in seeing defender Ronan Ryan collecting the cup following a massive defensive disaply as well.

Cuchullains Dunloy 3-12 Erin's Own Cargin 2-8

It was 1935 - some four years before the beginning of World War 2 - when until Sunday last, Dunloy were last kingpin of Antrim football.

Those at the match would have said it was almost worth waiting for as the Cuchullains destroyed four-in-a-row hopefuls Cargin by producing an exhibition of  attacking football at Corrigan Park on Sunday.

Cargin began well possession-wise but didn’t get on the board… that was left to Dunloy’s Keelan Molloy who chipped a superb two-pointer to start proceedings as they were meant to go on.

Midfielder Tom McFerrin followed up with an orange flag as the holders couldn’t find a rhythm going forward. That looked like end when Tom Shivers won a penalty but Tomas McCann blazed the spot kick wide, much to the amazement of the big Corrigan Park crowd

Dunloy’s Ryan McGarry's point saw  his side open up a four point lead which Luke McFerran added to with a cool goal to put his side in control.

Conhuir Johnston replied with a Cargin goal when his shot deflected off Reece Cunning and looped over the Dunloy keeper to cut the margin to two on the stroke of half time.

Dunloy were quicker out of the traps on the resumption when Seaan Elliot fed his  brother Nigel Elliot with a perfect pass and he duly shot home to the top corner. And when they got a penalty soon after, the same Elliot lashed it home to commence celebrations of a famous victory.

Mick McCann stepped up and dispatched a penalty for Cargin but it was Dunloy’s day in the sun and Tom McFerran pointed to seal the deal.

Despite late pressure it was truly Dunloy's day and the win was sealed when Tom McFerran pointed with a hand pass in a late counter-attack.

Naas 3-15; Maynooth 0-16

Kildare hurling continues to look to Naas who showed no mercy in routing Maynooth by eight points to make it Seven Up of successive title at St Conleth’s Park on Sunday.

Jack Sheridan led his side to glory with eight points although he didn’t see the end of the game after picking up two yellow cards in injury time.

By that stage, he had his business completed with goals by Ferran O’Sullivan, Cian Boran and Killian Harrington putting the game beyond a game and youthful Maynooth’s reach.

Naas now face Carlow champions Mount Leinster Rangers in the Leinster championship. Their opponents were led by current Naas manager Tom Mullally to an All-Ireland senior final in the 2013-14.
