Brehons Remember General Jim Cullen

The Brehon Law Society of New York City is hosting the First Annual Brehon Law Society Brigadier General James P. Cullen Legal Fellowship Fundraiser on Thursday, June 15, from 4.30 to 6:30 p.m. at the newly reopened Paddy Reilly’s Music Bar, 519 2nd Avenue and 29th Street in Manhattan.

The gathering will feature live traditional music and Irish dancing by the Niall O'Leary School.

The late Brigadier Cullen, "General Jim" to many, was a founding member and a former president of the Brehon Law Society of New York.

Stated a Brehon release: "He was committed to peace and justice on the island of Ireland. Fittingly, this fellowship is named in his memory because he was relentless in his pursuit of truth in relation to State violation of human rights, especially the murder of his friend, Patrick Finucane.

"The fellowship is a unique opportunity for a student at a US law school to spend the summer months interning with KRW Law, LLP in Belfast, Ireland. The law student fellow will be part of KRW Law’s work in the field of human rights law.

"This includes representing victims and survivors of the conflict in the fields of Coronial Law and Civil Litigation and also interfacing with the criminal justice agencies – including the Police Ombudsman’s Office and the Legacy Investigation Branch of the police – that discharge the State’s obligations under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"The annual fellowship is open to all students attending ABA-accredited US law schools. Ideally, the candidate will have a keen interest in Ireland from 1969 through the present. Interested candidates should contact the Brehon Law Society of New York. If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift to the Irish American Partnership in support of the General James P. Cullen Legal Fellowship, you may do so at https://www.irishap.org/brehonlaw."

A tax deductible donation to the fellowship can be made online at https://www.irishap.org/brehonlaw.
The foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, so all donations are tax deductible.

The Brehons noted that the Paddy Reilly's gathering is not a political event so attendance by members of the judiciary "is permissible and encouraged."
