HIbernians Express Solidarity After Vandalism

The Ancient Order of Hibernians has had cause to condemn vandalism in recent times against Catholic churches.

But the order us also stepping up in support of other faiths experiencing the same problem.

The Hibernians, in a release, stated that the New York City Police Department is investigating a "brazen crime of disrespect and hate, in which 'Hitler' was written on the outside of Congregation Beth Shalom of Kings Bay, Brooklyn.

In addition, the NYPD is investigating "another brazen crime of disrespect and hate" in Queens where a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was destroyed and painted with obscenities.

New York State Ancient Order of Hibernians Catholic Action Chairperson, James Russell said: “When is enough, enough. Yet again two houses of worship have been has been a victim of disrespect and hate.

"New York is becoming an unsafe place for people of faith. As an organization pledged 'To accept and support, without prejudice, the concept of free expression of religious practice for the people of the world,' we stand in solidarity."

The incident at Congregation Beth Shalom is suspected to have taken place between late Tuesday, August 16th and early Wednesday, August 17. It was discovered by Rabbi Asher Altshul as he was headed to morning prayers on Wednesday morning. The incident at the Hindu temple took place on Tuesday, August 16 and was caught on videotape.

The Hibernians are urging anyone who may have information that can help police with their investigation to call the NYPD at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
