Drummy, Duke upset No. 1 UNC

                Georgia Drummy, a senior from Dublin, helped no. 9 Duke women’s tennis team take down top-ranked North Carolina, 5-1, in Durham, N.C. on Friday. Drummy, 21st in the ITA rankings, knocked off no. 17 Elizabeth Scotty, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

                Alison O’Dea of Elon scored two singles victories last week. In Elon’s 7-0 sweep of UNC-Greensboro on the road on Wednesday, the Dublin sophomore handled McCollough Perry, 6-1, 6-0, at fifth singles. The Phoenix then dispatched visiting East Carolina, 4-1, on Saturday, with O’Dea, slotted at fourth singles, needing three sets to take care of Alisha Hussain, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

                Olwyn Ryan-Bovey of Appalachian State rallied from a first-set defeat to score a point at fourth singles over Georgia Southern’s Sophie Wagemaker. The freshman from St. Angelo, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh won the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. She also teamed with Virginia Poggi for a 6-4 win at second doubles that helped App State win the doubles point. Teammate Ellie Murphy, a sophomore from Dublin, joined Helena Jansen at first doubles, where they won, 6-3. Georgia Southern eked out a 4-3 win in the Saturday match in Statesboro, Ga.

                Mercyhurst swept Edinboro, 7-0, in a Friday match in Erie, Pa. Roisin Murphy contributed to the Lakers’ victory with a triumph at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2, over Anisha Thada. The freshman from Castlebar, Co. Mayo also joined Kayla Dean at first doubles for a 6-4 win.

                Wofford’s Breda Brennan defeated Mercer’s Francesca Franchi, 6-4, 6-2, at sixth singles as the Terriers scored a 6-1 win over Mercer at home on Friday. Brennan is a freshman from Limerick. 

MEN’S TENNIS

                Fifth-ranked Tennessee whitewashed Alabama, 7-0, in Knoxville on Friday. Dublin freshman Conor Gannon contributed a victory at sixth singles, defeating Zach Foster, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0(10-8).

                Binghamton has endured a rough season (1-21) and Friday’s 5-2 loss at home to Ball State was no exception. But Joshua Roe Flannelly, a sophomore from Naas, Co. Kildare, notched one of those points for the Bearcats with a 6-4, 6-2 takedown of Eli Herran at fifth singles.

                Montana treated visiting Sacramento State to a 5-2 smackdown last Tuesday. Oisin Shaffrey, a Dublin senior, did his part with a 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles over Mate Voros. 

                Spring Hill College junior Fergus O’Rourke, from Dublin, went three sets to defeat Mobile’s Boris Klingbiel, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, last Tuesday. The Badgers fell, 4-3, to Mobile in this end to the regular season.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

                Brian Fay, a University of Washington junior from Dublin, won section 1 of the men’s 5000 meters invitational at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. His winning time was 13:16.52.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

                Rhasidat Adeleke, a University of Texas sophomore from Dublin, got second place in the 200 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut Creek, Calif. Her 22.81 was eclipsed only by teammate Kynnedy Flannel’s 22.61.

                West Virginia sophomore Jo-Lauren Keane, from Corofin, Co. Clare, finished fourth in the 800 meters at the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa. She ran the race in 2:08.29 against a winning 2:04.47 by Binghamton’s Emily Mackay.

MEN’S GOLF

                Alex Maguire of Florida Atlantic University led the Owls to their first team victory since 2015 in the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Walden on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Tex. Maguire, a junior from Mornington, Co. Meath, combined rounds of 69, 70 and 74 to finish level with New Mexico State’s Garrison Smith for medal honors. A playoff went in Maguire’s favor on the second extra hole when he took par to Smith’s bogey. This is the first individual victory in a college tournament for Maguire, who plays out of Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club at home.

                “I’m so proud of Alex for getting his first college win,” said Mark Leon, Florida Atlantic’s Head Coach. “Alex has been playing some of the best golf I’ve ever seen at home, and he’s been frustrated that it hasn’t shown up on the road. He stayed the course and trusted himself. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving athlete.”

                Hartford’s Conor Byrne, a sophomore from Strabane, Co. Tyrone, led after two rounds of the Shark Invitational at Brookville Country Club in Brookville, N.Y. But he followed rounds of 67 and 71 with 75, which saw him fall back to third place, three strokes off the winning number posted by Southern Illinois’ Birgir Magnusson.

                Sam Murphy of Grand Canyon University got fourth place in the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif. A freshman from Galway, Murphy shot 71 and 70 to finish the 36-hole event three strokes under par and two in back of teammate Matteo Cristoni, who topped the leaderboard.

                Chattanooga’s Paul Conroy shot even-par 216 (73-72-71) for a share of 21st place in the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Miss. The sophomore from Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford was 12 strokes in back of Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, the medalist. Also in the field were South Alabama’s Jack Hearn, a senior from Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, tied for 41st place at 219 (72-74-73), Kansas State’s Luke O’Neill, a Galway sophomore, joint-69th at 224 (79-72-73) and Arkansas State’s Jack Madden, a junior from Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, tied for 78thplace at 227 (76-75-76). The field consisted of 98 golfers.

                Jordan Logue of Mississippi College grabbed a share of 15th place in the Gulf South Conference championship at the RTJ Golf Trail’s Magnolia Course in Mobile, Ala. The junior from Belfast combined rounds of 76, 73 and 71 to finish four strokes over par and 13 off the winning number set by West Florida’s Elias Haavisto.

                Rounds of 73, 73 and 74 left Charlie Denvir of South Carolina-Aiken four strokes over par and 14 off the winning score belonging to Wofford’s Cedric Otten in the Wofford invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg in South Carolina. The sophomore from Blackrock, Dublin earned a share of 37th place.

WOMEN’S GOLF

                Lauren Walsh played a big role in helping Wake Forest capture the Atlantic Coast Conference championship at The Reserve in Pawley’s Island, S.C. The junior from County Kildare shared third place with a teammate and two others after firing rounds of 75, 67 and 73. Nine strokes separated her from medalist Phoebe Brinker of Duke. Also on the course were Sara Bryne of Miami (Fla.), who tied for 22ndplace at 223 (75-71-77), and Mairead Martin of Louisville, who finished joint-39th at 230 (77-72-81). Byrne is a freshman from Douglas, Cork, while Martin, a senior, hails from Kanturk, Co. Cork.

                Jan Browne of Flagler tied for eighth place in the Peach Belt Conference championship at the Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga. The Kilkenny freshman turned in scorecards totaling 78, 77 and 76, which left her 13 strokes on the high side of the medalist, North Georgia’s Madeline Ananthasane. Flagler shared second place in the team chase.
