Felician's McCarthy posts team highs

Sean McCarthy was a bright spot for Felician men’s basketball in Tuesday’s 78-55 loss at home to Pace. The 6-6 sophomore from Cork posted team highs of 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals in a reserve role. He shot 50 percent from the floor, both inside the arc (5-for-10) and outside (2-for-4), and was perfect on six free throws. He then earned a spot in the starting lineup for Saturday’s road loss, 108-76, to Fairmont State. He scorched the nets with 8-of-12 shooting (3-of-4 from the West Virginia panhandle) for 19 points. The Golden Falcons are 3-7.

Jamie Muldowney poured in 20 points to help Coker defeat Virginia-Wise, 80-77, in overtime in Hartsville, S.C. on Saturday The 6-7 freshman from County Laois drilled six of 10 field goal attempts, including a merciless five of six from the Darlington County line, and three of four from the foul line. The Cobras are 7-5. 

C.J. Fulton had the high numbers for Lafayette in last Monday’s encounter with Princeton, although the only numbers that really matter were 69-58, the Leopards coming out on the short end in New Jersey. The 6-3 sophomore from Belfast led his side with 16 points (6-of-10 from the floor, including 1-of-3 from Route 206, and 3-of-3 at the reparations line), eight rebounds and three assists (co-high). The Leopards are licking the wounds of a 1-9 start to the season. 

Still looking for their first win is California, which fell to 0-12 with a 71-62 road loss to Santa Clara on Sunday. Sophomore Sam Alajiki chipped in eight points for the losing side on 2-of-5 shooting, all from the diamond district, as well as 2-of-2 from the foul line. ND Okafor added five points for the Bears on 2-of-5 shooting from close range and 1-of-2 from the line. Both are from Dundalk. 

Leading scorer for St. Mary’s (Tex.) was scant consolation for Ryan Leonard in last Monday’s 74-61 loss to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Tex. The 6-4 senior from Tralee, Co. Kerry popped in 12 points, hitting five of nine attempts from the field, including both three-point tries. His three steals were a co-high for the Rattlers. 

James Beckom led John Brown University in reading caroms off the boards, pulling down seven rebounds in last Monday’s 61-59 loss at home to North Texas at Dallas. The 6-3 senior from Cork also put eight points on the scoreboard, dropping four of nine shots from the floor. The Golden Eagles go into the Christmas break with a 3-10 mark. 

Eli Lenihan was perfect on six free throws as Spring Hill lost, 71-66, to Savannah State in Mobile, Ala. on Saturday. The 6-5 Cork sophomore added a field goal to finish with eight points. He also assisted on six buckets, a game high, and claimed five rebounds for the Badgers (6-5). 

Darragh O’Sullivan got in for 15 minutes of Florida Tech’s 111-63 shellacking of Johnson University (Fla.) in Melbourne, Fla. on Sunday. The 6-5 sophomore from Cork chipped in nine points (3-of-4 (2-of-2 from long distance) and 1-of-2 at the line). He also received credit for five assists. Tech is 9-2. 

Silas Sunday got his first start for Iona in last Tuesday’s 70-64 victory over Princeton in Union, N.J. The 7-foot center from Lucan, Dublin posted five points, making both his field goal attempts and one of his two free throws.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Deborah Ogayemi scored seven points and put the clamps on eight rebounds as Texas-Rio Grande Valley hammered St. Mary’s (Tex.), 55-39, in Edinburg, Tex. on Thursday. She clicked on three of seven shots from the floor and converted her lone free throw. Ogayemi is a 5-11 sophomore from Waterford. TRGV is 5-4. 

Lucy Coogan scored eight points in the last eight minutes of the game, including two free throws with 35 seconds left, to help Caldwell forestall a St. Michael’s rally and leave the gym victorious, 66-63. The 6-foot frosh out of Kilkenny finished the game with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor (2-of-4 outside the 3-point arc) and 3-of-4 at the foul line. Her three assists were also co-high for the Cougars (5-5). Earlier in the week, Caldwell treated the visiting College of Staten Island to a 65-49 hosing. Coogan again flicked in four of 10 field goal attempts. She also made both her free throws to give her 10 points for the game to go with five rebounds. 

Katie Williamson accounted for nine points and eight rebounds for Southern Connecticut State in Saturday’s 55-43 loss to Jefferson in Philadelphia. The 6-1 junior out of Dublin hit four of 11 field goal attempts. The Owls dropped to 6-3. 

Ella O’Donnell scored seven points and laid hands on a game-high nine caroms as Quinnipiac lost, 57-54, to Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Saturday. A 6-3 freshman from Shankill, Co. Dublin, she connected on three of five shots from the floor, including one of two from North Avenue. The Bobcats are 5-5 and 0-1 after this opener to their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate.
