Fire destroys and reveals

The drought in Ireland has been exposing formerly hidden traces of everything from ancient burial tombs to long vanished castles. A fire caused by the exceptionally dry conditions burned away an area of gorse on Bray head in County Wicklow but also exposed a sign made up of whitewashed stones dating back to World War II. The “EIRE” sign was intended to alert Allied and German planes that they were about to enter neutral Irish airspace. Irish Air Corps photo via
