War's horrors, life's joys

Actor Shane O’Regan pictured as Private Thomas “Tommo” Peaceful earlier today on the grounds of Collins Barracks in Dublin from where soldiers left to fight in World War I. He will play the central character in the Gaiety Theatre’s May 29-June 2 run of “Private Peaceful,” which is an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 2003 children’s novel about the horrors of war and the joyfulness of life. The 2012 film version was directed by Pat O’Connor and starred Jack O’Connell and George MacKay. The Gaiety Theatre is remembering those Irish soldiers of the 1914-1918 years by inviting people to send in photos of members of their families who took part in the war. Photos received will be displayed in the foyer of the Gaiety Theatre during the run. LEON FARRELL/PHOTOCALL IRELAND
