Arts Minister Heather Humphreys is one of those being being tipped to succeed Frances Fitzgerald as Tánaiste or deputy prime minister. Fitzgerald resigned Tuesday against the backdrop of the Garda whistleblower affair. Her resignation averted a likely pre-Christmas general election, although there remains the expectation that a weakened Leo Varadkar-led government may well be forced to call an election in the relatively near future.
