With Irish voters going to the polls in the general election tomorrow some observers are casting their minds back to February, 1982 and the general election that resulted in a return to power by Charles Haughey. Haughey’s recapturing of the office of Taoiseach came about as a result of the “Gregory Deal,” which saw newly elected Independent TD, Tony Gregory, secure a package of commitments from the Fianna Fáil leader. Many see Independent TDs playing a critical role in the formation of a new government after the February election of 2016.
