On this date in 1868, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, who had left Ireland after the rebellion of 1848, was assassinated in Ottawa. Joseph Phelan, a Fenian, was later hanged for the murder of the man known as the Father of the Canadian Federation. Today, there is a memorial to McGee in his native County Louth.
