Body found in suitcase

The body of an African woman has been found in a suitcase in Dublin.

The remains of Rudo Mawere (26), a business student from Malawi, were discovered by a passerby on St. David's Terrace, Blackhorse Avenue, early on Sunday.

Gardaí believe the two foot by four foot case was abandoned the previous evening and are investigating if the woman was killed close to where it was discovered.

Ms. Mawere was fully clothed and had a plastic bag over her head when found. A postmortem examination by Deputy State Pathologist, Michael Curtis, showed that she died as a result of asphyxiation.

It is understood her body was wheeled to the spot where the suitcase was abandoned, beside a number of wheelie bins close to an army barracks. CCTV footage from nearby shops is currently being examined in an attempt to identify those who may have been in the area on Saturday evening.

Garda Superintendet James Hynes asked for anyone who may have seen an argument between a couple in the area earlier on the Saturday to come forward.

It is believed Ms. Mawere may have been in a relationship with a man. Gardaí interviewed a flatmate, who last saw her on Saturday afternoon, on Monday.

St, David's Terrace is a mix of established homes and rented, two-storey red-brick houses. The area is known for having a mix of nationalities, including Romanians and Africans, living in it.

The Africa Center, a charity promoting social inclusion of African people in Ireland, condemned the "gruesome" killing.

"The death of this lady is shocking and dumping her in a suitcase is unimaginable," the center's chief executive, Eric Yao, said.
