Carmel mourns for Sullivan family

Police officers by the hundred saluted the life and service of Police Captain Thomas Sullivan as they mourned his passing and the deaths of his wife and two daughters in a fire at their Putnam County home last week.

Sullivan, 48, an NYPD veteran who was police chief in Larchmont, Westchester County, his wife, Donna, 47, and the couple's daughters, Meaghan, 17, and Mairead, 15, died in the blaze.

Thomas Sullivan Jr., 20, escaped the blaze with the help of his hero father.

Meaghan Sullivan, a senior, and Mairead, a freshman, both attended Carmel High School. Donna Sullivan worked at the Arms Acres Inpatient Facility in Carmel.

The May 1 fire was reported by a neighbor at about 2 a.m. All four victims died from smoke inhalation, according to the Putnam County coroner.
