Sergio was born in Ireland on March 5, 2011 with an incomplete oesophagus, a condition which prevents him from eating, drinking and swallowing. He has been given approval to have a life-changing operation at Children's Hospital in Boston.

Sergio's father, Donal O'Connor, is a traditional musician in Dublin and has the support of Boston's Irish music community. The Burren fundraiser was organized by traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello.
