One down as pols protest

Miss "Irish I Were Drunk" has taken her leave from the Urban Outfitters website.

Unwittingly, the young model in the provocative t-shirt had become the poster child for what many see as the hijacking of St. Patrick's Day for dubious gain.

Urban Outfitters sparked an uproar in recent weeks with St. Patrick's Day-linked clothing items linking the Irish not just with alcohol, but with outright drunkenness.

The stereotyping t-shirts and hats prompted an irate letter from the leadership of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and also, in recent days, a missive from members of Congress active in Irish American affairs.

Rep. Joe Crowley, along with nine members of the Congressional Ad Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs, sent a letter to the CEO of Urban Outfitters, Tedford Marlow, calling on the retailer to end the sale of clothing items and accessories "depicting severe and negative stereotypes of Irish and Irish Americans."

The letter specifically referred to the "Irish I Were Drunk" t-shirt.

Wrote the reps. in part: "We understand that such items may have been created with the intent of good humor. And, as members of the Ad Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs, we know that Irish and Irish-Americans often revel in self-deprecating and blunt humor.

"However, we believe these items represent a step too far, crossing a line into stereotyping and denigration, which is why you are likely hearing from so many Irish-Americans about the matter.

"We are also concerned about what some might interpret as encouragement of binge drinking - a very serious problem affecting many of our nation's young people.

"Again, we strongly urge you to review your St. Patrick's Day clothing line and consider its effects on the 35 million-strong Irish-American community, as well as its implications for binge drinking. We also hope your review results in the withdrawal from distribution and sale of the items in question.

In addition to Crowley, the letter was signed by Reps. Peter King, Richard Neal, Eliot Engel, James McGovern, Bill Pascrell Jr., Carolyn Maloney, Frank Pallone Jr., Tim Holden and Chris Smith.
