NY case settled for $5.6 million

In a settlement of a legal suit brought by a construction worker who sustained serious injuries while working on a site, a court in Manhattan has authorized a payment of $5.6 million to the injured man.

Attorney JP Delaney of O'Dwyer and Bernstien brought the case to New York State Supreme Court, New York County, after the concrete worker, whose parents are from Sligo and Cavan, suffered lower back injuries after a fall in February, 2008.

The worker is a member of Local 18a and the fall occurred during the construction of a new skyscraper on Manhattan's West Side.

The man, 26, who prefers to remain anonymous, underwent spinal fusion surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery after his fall.

"He will never return to work in construction and his normal daily life has been altered greatly," said attorney Delaney.
